Sea containers roll up doors is what we call them. But they are really not designed purposely for sea containers, they are just a light metal roll up doors that can be used on just about any door opening that has a decent wood or steel framing.
Now up to our knowledge none of the sea container manufacturer build sea containers with roll up doors and that's kind of obvious as there is no standard to where the sea container roll up door is to be installed.
So if you have to have a sea container with a roll up door your only option is to have the roll up door or doors added to the container. And that's is exactly what we do.
Instead of purchasing or leasing a sea container for your storage requirements then start looking into adding a roll up door. We can have as many sea container roll up doors installed as you need and you don't have to purchase the container you can still just rent or lease it.

The sea container roll up doors comes in variety of sizes. From as small as 4 foot wide up to 12 foot wide with a standard height of a bout 8 foot tall. Any taller than that will not work as the tallest sea container is the high cube and that's only 9.5 foot tall.
The most common sea container roll up door orders we get is th 8ft wide door installed on a 20ft Sea container sides and the 7ft wide roll up door installed on 20ft and 40ft Sea container front wall. Every once in a while we get orders to replace the sea container cargo doors with a roll up door.
Replacing the cargo doors with a roll up door takes a little more time and material as there will be about one foot of gap in the top of the door frame that need to be filled with steel plate.
The sea container roll up door kit is actually a really simple kit and there is not much to it. Two vertical tracks, door and spring assembly, and a small bag of hardware that contain bolts and nuts, door stopper, a handle and a pull down rope. Same thing if it's an insulated sea container roll up door.
sea container roll up door installation.
Throughout the years of modifying sea containers we have seen several ways of installing a sea container roll up door and to till the truth none of these ways looked good for us. Yes the door will function fine but it will not look professional and down the road will end up with problems.
Since just about all the sea container roll up doors are the same and function the same the problems are not with the doors themselves. It's the door frame.
For example we have seen sea container roll up doors installed without a door frame at all. The track were spot welded directly to the steel edge of the container and the rest were sealed with caulking.
Another example we have seen sea container roll up doors installed with a door frame made of steel angel and the track were spot welded to the edge of the angel without a door threshold.
Our way of installing the sea container roll up door
- Measure, Cut, and clean the roll up door opening.
All edges have to be straight and ready for clean weld
- Installing the roll up door threshold.
To prevent water from getting in the container
- Framing the sides and top with 2"X2" steel tubing.
2"X2" Steel tubing cut at 45 degrees and welded all the way around
- Cleaning and sealing the door frame.
Wire wheel the frame inside out and seal from inside
- Prime and paint.
Spray primer and paint inside out
We use the same process and framing material for installing sea container man door, windows and even vents.
Now that the sea container roll up door frame is done. Installing the roll up door is really easy. It really does not take more than 20 minutes to install and adjust the door tensioner.
We line up the roll up door on the floor of the container with the opening, attach the vertical tracks to the roll assembly, using an extra set of hands we stand the assembly against the door frame. 6 self tapping bolts three on each track.
All whats left is install the door stoppers, handle, pull down rope and add some tension to the roll up door coil spring and the door is installed.
